Industry Legend Hoover Dam Passes

On July 22, 2019, at 11 ½ years of age, after more than 10 years of residence at ORIgen, the ownership of Hoover Dam made the decision to bring this legendary sire’s life to a dignified conclusion.

Born on January 25, 2008 as the third calf from a Pathfinder Hoover Angus female, this top-selling bull of the 2009 Hoover Angus sale arrived at ORIgen two weeks after his first birthday.

Hoover Dam was among the top 10 bulls of the Angus breed for progeny registrations in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.  He was one of only four bulls in the breed on the “Top 10” list of sires each of those four years, and the ONLY bull of these four bred in a herd that registers less than 1000 head per year.

From his first collection of 105 units at 14 months of age through his largest one-day collection of 846 units as a four-year-old, Hoover Dam was a consistent collector. His final successful collection was on June 12, 2019 of 213 units. There were 901 collection days that produced semen approved for sale that resulted in 238,813 units.

As of his passing, 233,396 units of that semen were sold or used by owners of the bull for a gross sale total of $4,514,565 with 15,406 A.I. certificates sold to register progeny of Hoover Dam in the American Angus Association herd book. Sold at $40 each, they generated another $616,450 in gross sales to push his total of semen and certificate sales to $5,131,015. Hoover Dam was the ORIgen semen sales leader in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.  Although there are no official public records with which to compare, Dick Beck, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at ORIgen, says “Hoover Dam is the only sire in history owned exclusively by Angus breeders to have ever reached or surpassed that sales total”.

In the 2019 American Angus Association Pathfinder Report, there are 85 daughters of Hoover Dam that are active Pathfinder Dams, nearly five percent of the daughters that have enough age to be eligible.  Hoover Dam himself earned Pathfinder honors his first year of eligibility.

As of his passing, Hoover Dam has 15,821 Angus progeny with AHIR weaning records.  He has been used on four continents with semen exported to Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Russia.

Hoover Dam has set and broken production and sales records at ORIgen and he truly epitomizes the “Breeder to Breeder Genetic Services” concept that is the foundation upon which the success of ORIgen has been built.

Hoover Customers Disperse Cow Herd

David & Lee Shultz of Luray, Missouri will be dispersing all of their fall calving cows and a large portion of their spring calving herd on August 16 at the Edina Livestock Auction in Missouri due to David’s declining health.

Their Angus herd is completely sired by Hoover Angus bulls, and they have strived for correct structure, muscle, moderate frame, and good udders.  Their most important criteria when selecting bulls over the years has been excellent disposition.  Visitors to their farm are continually impressed by the quality of their cow herd and calm temperaments.

Please contact David & Lee at 660-727-1224 for more information.

2019 Pathfinder Report

The Pathfinder Report from the American Angus Association identifies superior cows based on production and fertility.  It also identifies bulls who have at least 5 daughters listed in the Pathfinder report in one year.

Hoover Angus is home to 39 Pathfinder cows listed in the 2019 Report as well as 6 herd sires!  Herd sires include Hoover Dam with 85 daughters, SydGen CC&7 with 81 daughters, Mogck Bullseye with 43 daughters, Basin Excitement with 25 daughters, Connealy Counselor with 6 daughters, and Connealy Direct Deposit with 6 daughters.  These 6 herd sires have a significant influence on our cow herd today, as well as the nation’s cow herd!

Congratulations to Craig Miller of Minnesota for his cow Blkcp Mary of Ellston N285 for being included in the 2019 Pathfinder report.  He purchased this female in our 2016 auction as a bred heifer.

Congratulations to Josh Scheckel on his cow, Ellston Scheckel B97, on achieving Pathfinder status in the 2019 report.  B97 was an embryo purchased from Hoover Angus, by the great Erica of Ellston G366 cow.  This is G366’s third Pathfinder daughter!
