Hoover Angus to host National Cattledog Finals October 10-13, 2024
Professionally-trained stock dogs and their handlers from all over the United States and Canada will convene at Hoover Angus October 10-13 for their main event of the year. Dogs that have earned enough points to qualify through U.S. Border Collie Handler’s Association’s trials earlier this year will compete. There are two classes of competition, Open and Nursery. The Open class is for dogs of all ages and any breed. The Nursery competition, also open to any breed of dog, is limited to dogs four years of age or less.
Hoover Angus will supply 190 head of Angus heifers to use as the stock in the competition. Through the use of whistle or voice commands, each dog handler will instruct their dog to gather the cattle from a distance of 250 to 450 yards away and maneuver the cattle through a set of obstacles before penning the cattle at the end of the course. Another challenge includes sorting one heifer from the group of heifers – a skill needed in real-world ranching situations. The final day of competition includes a “double lift” whereby the dog is required to fetch and bring together two sets of heifers as one part of the obstacle course. Scoring is based on points for successful completion of obstacles plus the time it takes to complete the course.
October 10-12 are preliminary days beginning at 7:45 am and generally ending in the early evening. The Finals begin Sunday, October 13 at 8:30 am where the top 10 Nursery dogs and the top 15 Open class dogs compete for the title. Ringgold County residents participating in the Finals include Brian Brown and Bob Johnson of Tingley and Jeff Livingston of Diagonal.
This national event is open to the public with free admission and parking. Lunch and restrooms are available on the grounds. In case of inclement weather, spectators can watch live on the big screen TVs inside the Hoover Angus sale facility. The event will be located at the Hoover Angus Sale Facility, 2399 110th Street, Shannon City, IA. From the Tingley turn-off on Highway 169, go two miles north to 110th Street, then ¾ mile east. Once the trials have begun, a link to the live stream of the event can be found at http://cattledogfinals.usbcha.com.

Hoover Angus Purchases Interest in Galactic
Hoover Angus along with High Point Genetics, Vollmer Angus, and Breeder Link are pleased to announce Hoover Angus has purchased an interest in Sitz Galactic 723G!
“He's the one!” says Joy after seeing this calm temperament, 5 year-old bull in person. Landi relates, “He's just what we need to maintain and even increase frame size while keeping other traits in check. We are thrilled about the foot quality this bull exhibits at his age, as well as an exceptional ability to slick off early in the season - as seen in person and with his Hair Shed EPD. Galactic will be just the ticket for our commercial customers looking to sell calves by the pound and retain replacement females. We couldn't be more pleased!”
Galactic combines an appropriate level of calving ease and growth along with a reasonable amount of milk to be able to produce tight-uddered, long-lasting females that can excel in fescue country.
Semen is available through Breeder Link and his owners. Contact Landi if you still like 1/2 cc straws - we've got 'em! Registration #19393010.
John Kiburz | November 26, 1925 - January 8, 2024
Today we share the passing of John Kiburz, the 2nd generation of Hoover Angus. In John's life nearly a century long, he saw many changes in this world - in agriculture and beyond. Born and raised in the Depression, this led to John's frugal lifestyle and the ability to successfully navigate the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. John was able to expand Hoover Angus by timely, wise investments in land and cattle.
John instilled a passion for Angus and the farm in his daughter Joy and his granddaughter Landi. God willing, may John's descendants continue the tradition of quality Angus cattle at Hoover Angus for generations to come.
May the water be plentiful and the cows be black for John to enjoy in God's eternally green pastures.
