First, attendees heard an overview from Association and Angus Journal staff, as well as updates from Dr. Tom Field, NCBA, and Tom Brink of the largest cattle feeding operation in the world, Five Rivers Cattle Feeding.  The next day, the group toured the Tyson/IBP plant in Dakota City, and Whole Foods in Omaha. Candace’s steers purchased from the Hoover Angus Farm program had an average daily gain of 3.40 lbs/day, 14.4” ribeye, 7.43% IMF (two high choice steers, one choice), and an average yield grade of 2.6. The carcass value added per day on feed was $3.516, over $.50 more than the next highest pen of steers. Her pen was the highest average gaining pen and the highest average marbling pen out of 8 exhibitors. Candace used visual appraisal and carcass EPDs to select her steers last fall.
